The Smily Gazelles (team 120 in 2022) 4th participation in the Rallye Aicha Des Gazelles du Maroc, the biggest women-only off-track rally in the world, finished on the 2nd April 2022 on the beach of Essaouira, a lovely historic town on the West coast of Morocco.
They were exhausted but delighted to be on the finishing line.
This concluded an 8 day test of endurance, solidarity, navigational skills, driving in difficult terrain, all this without GPS, nor phones, following headings with their compass.
The weather was mixed – sand storms interspersed with lovely bouts of sunshine and blue skies. Visibility was extremely poor during the sandstorms making following your heading with your car compass all the more important.
The gazelles sleep in their own tents for 8 nights, 6 of which are in a camp where delicious food is provided by Moroccan chefs in the evening. There are 2 “marathons’ where the participants sleep wherever they find themselves in the desert (usually they find the other “gazelles” to share the experience of amazing starry skies.)
Jamila and Benedicte, as in previous years, supported the British Moroccan Society as their charity of choice. All proceeds will go towards the BMS’s charitable giving programme which supports grassroots organizations in Morocco. To help click here to donate and make sure to mention RAG in the ‘additional notes.’
