SUMMARY:Perdicaris affair in Tangier\, talk by Professor Diana Wylie
DESCRIPTION:Diana Wylie will discuss the Perdicaris affair in Tangier. \n \nDiana Wylie is a professor of history at Boston University who has published four books about southern and North African history. She has worked extensively with the American Legation in Tangier (where she is based at the moment) and is the author of a fantastic book about the legation and its art collection entitled “Enchantment.” She is currently updating the book. She will be talking to members about her work and particularly about what is known as the “Perdicaris affair” which caused a massive diplomatic crisis between Morocco and the USA. Ion Perdicaris was a wealthy American citizen of Greek extraction who was kidnapped in Tangier by the bandit Raisuli in 1904. The USA almost went to war over the incident. It is a fascinating story and made even more exciting by the fact that the American Legation Museum has recently acquired letters and documents relating to the affair\, thanks to the intervention of BMS member Barbara Abensur\, who will also be at the event. It will take place at the National Liberal Club in the Lounge on 14th May from 7pm. \nTickets can be purchased via this LINK.

SUMMARY:Jane Green Book Talk
DESCRIPTION:On 13th May\, the best-selling novelist and lover of all things Moroccan\, Jane Green will give a talk at the National Liberal Club about her new book set in Marrakesh. The talk will begin at 7.30pm in The Lounge. \nPurchase tickets here \nJane Green is the author of eighteen New York Times Bestsellers\, and has over ten million books in print. She is also “Dear Jane”\, the advice columnist for the Daily Mail Online. Three of her books have been made into movies for the Lifetime network: Tempting Fate\, To Have and to Hold\, and Family Pictures. A native Londoner\, she lives in Westport\, Connecticut with her husband. When not there\, you can usually find her in Marrakech. \n \nSister Stardust \nIn her first novel inspired by a true story\, Jane Green re-imagines the life of troubled icon Talitha Getty in this transporting story from a forgotten chapter of the Swinging ’60s. \n \nFrom afar Talitha’s life seemed perfect. In her twenties\, and already a famous model and actress\, she moved from London to a palace in Marrakesh\, with her husband Paul Getty\, the famous oil heir. There she presided over a swirling ex-pat scene filled with music\, art\, free love and a counterculture taking root across the world. \nWhen Claire arrives in London from her small town\, she never expects to cross paths with a woman as magnetic as Talitha Getty. Yearning for the adventure and independence\, she’s swept off to Marrakesh\, where the two become kindred spirits. But beneath Talitha’s glamourous façade lurks a darkness few can understand. As their friendship blossoms and the two grow closer\, the realities of Talitha’s precarious existence set off a chain of dangerous events that will alter Claire’s life forever. \n  \n
